Lime has been used in mortars, plasters and renders since Roman times, but recently i.e since the second world war - the increased use of Portland cement has taken its toll on many buildings.

Originally when buildings were built using lime mortar any moisture on the wall would be absorbed by the mortar and evaporate out in dry weather.

When cement is used this cannot happen and the brick or stone becomes damaged. Lime mortar also allows for thermal expansion and some movement.

Unlike cement, Lime mortar allows the building to ‘breathe’, one of the most common causes of damp in old stone buildings is Portland cement pointing.

For the environmentally conscious it allows the bricks or stone to be re-used or reclaimed.

There is much written to sing the praises of the benefits of Lime but often the proof is in the pudding in that many builders having used lime much prefer it to using cement and a building built or renovated using lime not only looks better but feels better.
